Serve as Physician of the Day During the 124th Indiana General Assembly

The IAFP is asking you to volunteer a day of your time treating legislators, their staffs, and other members of the Capitol community at the Indiana Statehouse in February and April of 2025. This service to the legislature demonstrates first-hand the value and necessity of family physicians in our state. Sign up to serve, get introduced on the floor, and hear your name become part of the official legislative record.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • DUTIES / ACTIVITIES
Your purpose as Physician of the Day is to provide first aid, acute care, and emergency services until further support is available. Supplies located in the Physician of the Day office at the statehouse should be ample to meet those needs. You may wish to bring your own stethoscope and you should bring your own prescription pad.

Patients should be prescribed medications to last them one to three days with a prescription and/or instructions to see their personal family physician when necessary. Please do not bring prescription drug samples to the Statehouse. There are two pharmacies within walking distance where patients can have their prescriptions filled.

You are not expected to supply medications for chronic or maintenance care. If the patient does not have a family physician, or other primary care physician, for follow up care, the Academy can provide names of family physicians for referral.

You will be treating elected officials and staff members. Please be aware that in providing this service, you will also be visible as an informal Academy representative during this time.

  • DRESS / ATTIRE
As Physician of the Day, you will be introduced to the members of the House and Senate when each chamber begins their day’s work. In order to be in the chambers, you must be wearing appropriate business attire (men must wear a jacket and tie).

  • ARRIVAL TIME, PLACE & PARKING
The Physician of the Day program takes place at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis (200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204, at the corner of Capitol and Washington Street). Plan to arrive there at around 8:30 a.m. You can expect your day to end around 4:30 p.m.

  • LUNCH
The IAFP will provide a $15 gift card to Cafe Patachou, which is located at 225 West Washington Street, in the Simon Property Group Headquarters at the corner of Washington and Capitol, directly across from the State Capitol Building. You can view their menu online at http://cafepatachou.com and place an order by phone if you prefer to pick it up and eat at the Statehouse.

  • OTHER NOTES
Feel free to get out of the Physician’s office, walk around the halls, and make the day interesting for yourself. We have contracted with a team of legislative consultants (KWK Management Group) who are working on your behalf at the statehouse, and one or more of them are likely to stop by the office while they are there.
