Randall Suttor, MD A. Alan Fischer Award
Established in 1984, the IAFP’s A. Alan Fischer Award is designed to “recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to family medicine education in undergraduate, graduate and continuing education spheres.” The award was named in honor of Dr. Alan Fischer, a long-time member of the IAFP who made significant contributions to family medicine education at the state and national levels. The Indiana Academy of Family Physicians proudly names Dr. Randall Suttor, MD, as this year’s recipient of the A. Alan Fischer Award.
Dr. Suttor earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Taylor University before pursuing his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed residency at Memorial Hospital South Bend Family Residency where he now serves as core faculty. Prior to joining the faculty he served as a community physician in Bremen after serving the community of Ukarumpa in Papau New Guinea for two years, where he worked to create an expansive toolkit of international healthcare knowledge, skills, and contacts that he has brought to his teaching.
Many would argue that Dr. Suttor’s teaching goes far beyond the residents and students that rotate through the program - he is a mentor, role model, and inspiration. His nominator says, “he is our local expert in evidence based medicine, can stand toe-to-toe with specialists on their own literature, and role models for our residents what it means to be a life long learner.” And residency program director, Tina Jennings, MD, says, “he possesses a unique ability to convey complex medical concepts with clarity, fostering an engaging learning environment that stimulates intellectual curiosity and critical thinking among residents and faculty alike.”
The IAFP congratulates and thanks Dr. Randall Suttor for his dedication to education in family medicine and congratulates him for receiving the 2024 A. Alan Fischer Award.
